Trauma, Toxic Stress and Brain Development
(Up to 10-years-old)
Each child is different and there is no one size fits all approach to working with children who have suffered trauma as the nature, timing and pattern of the experience will contribute to how the impact is manifested. However, understanding how trauma can impact on a child's developing brain and, in particular, how this may cause their stress response systems to be overactive and overly reactive to stress, can help professionals understand a child's behavioural and emotional states. This in turn helps professionals better support the child and their family. This workshop will provide an overview of trauma and brain development, the stress response system, the importance of invested adults and the importance of the adults’ self care.
